The new hospital ofVilanova i la Geltrúis a large healthcare complex of some 50,000m2that is situated between the current city and the new northern enlargement. The desire to plan a building that correctly expresses the connection of the old quarter with the north enlargement is the starting point of the project. The main entrance is in the Ronda Ibéricaas an arrival point of the route that, following CarrerdelsHorts, leads the old centre to the new enlargement. In front of the northwest façade, where the outpatients section and day hospital are situated, the construction is planned of a large park that will separate the hospital from the buildings of housing units of the new north enlargement. On the northeast façade are the hospitalisation units in the form of a point, thus ensuring that the future green space that will retrace the Torrent de la Pasteraand the pretty views towards the Torre de la Inmortalidad, are integrated into the rooms of the hospital. The hospital absorbs the difference of 4 m that the site possesses by being embedded into the terrain in such a way as the entrance to emergencies which is in the north façade is actually on the first floor.

To distance itself from the massiveness typical of these hospital mega-complexes, the proposal seeks the incorporation of atmospheres typical of the old centre of Vilanovaby designing some of the spaces of the new hospital such as the entrance square, the small “counter-square” or the tree-lined courtyards of the hospitalisation units. The efficiency and optimisation of the routes, the correct organisation of the different functional programmes, the development of sustainable energy strategies or the generation of warm spaces where natural light is the leading player have been other central elements considered in conceiving the project.
